Have you tried this yet? Go to www.dcad.org and go to your property. There you are given the option to protest your property taxes with the UFile on line. You select a pin and it is emailed to you very quickly. I had what I thought was an easy protest, I thought it was Miller time. The property is valued at $159,820, and I have a closing statement for a larger unit in the same complex that closed for $148,000. I figured the price per square foot at $86 ish and did the calculations, uploaded a PDF of the letter and the closing statement. Simple as A-B-C.

Not! Got a message saying my documentation was too complicated. Now it’s Hearing Time.

Oh Tax Doc — this one’ s a dousy! I’m going to forgo a graphic:

Dear Tax Doctor:

Got my taxes and am still reeling in shock. Our taxable value went from $1,385,038 to $1,488,000. The fifth year previous value was $1,182,500 which leaves us a 57.29% increase over a five year period.

Question: I thought the legislature put brakes on how high the appraisal district can raise taxes? 57.29% seems excessively high.

Second question: is it worth a trip down to John Carpenter Freeway (showing lots of cleavage) to argue these down before I have to do the whole review board thing? I may be out of town in mid-June. And those people on the panel always have bad breath.

Our house is 10 years old and I made some major repairs this year, more are needed. Nothing in our ‘hood has sold even though several homes are on the market. There is a “quiet” foreclosure on the market nearby. Any light at the end of the tunnel?

And do you think I can deduct the boob job to give me more cleavage to get my property taxes lowered?

THANKS!!!

The Girls.

I saw this while tootling around the AG’s website and it reminded me that my kids were about to go to Conn’s to buy a new refrigerator for their CONDO. So they were almost CONNED at CONNS in their CONdo… shame on me for making light of this: if you read the AG’s report, a lot of people have been ripped off by this place. If I were a major Conn’s shareholder, man, I’d insist they chat with the folks at AIG and (1) give everyone they’ve ripped off free appliances for life (2) change their name asap, way overdue on that one (3) behave. If you have been conned by Conn’s, here’s where you can file a complaint easy-peasy.
