To tell you the truth, I hate this time of year. I am a summer gal, pink is my fave color, but the minute September rolls in we go into pumpkin overload way too early so the things are all rotten come October 31. But who am I to rain on your ghoulish decor campaign?

Apples to Zinnias, located in The Plaza at Preston Center, which is having a huge party benefiting Wednesday’s Child this Thursday, is challenging Halloween-decor obsessives to deck their houses and submit photos of their creations for a grand prize. The head witch at Apples to Zinnias will judge the photos for the most festive décor and the winner will receive just what they need: a Halloween gift to add to their decoration collection. Do you see what my kitchen table looks like with all the boys at home? Fort Hood in candy-cane getup. To keep my sanity, I need a place where these boys can go play Dick Cheney. After church on Christmas Eve, I settled down with a glass of bubbly, warm and toasty in cashmere, to peruse the kind of house porn I crave during these times: ranch properties. Acres and acres of ponds, tanks, deer, ducks, geese, pigs and enough coyote to keep Sarah Palin frocked through her next campaign. Found some good ones, too, like Turkey Creek Organic Rice Farm — 1633 acres in Wharton County raising organic rice! Holiday dinner – done! Boasting $100,000 annual income from the land plus a three-bedroom, two-bath cedar lodge. “Trophy Deer and wild hogs”: our African heads will finally have a home. Where do I sign? Where is Wharton County?

I hate my fireplace mantel. Out of scale, I think. So I’m hoping Santa comes down the chimney, takes this and leaves me a new one. Thank God for the talents of James Davis, former design manager of The Black Iris in Laguna Beach, CA, who flew in to create Christmas at my house this year. (Full disclosure: James flew in to Dallas to decorate the house of a friend, and I begged her for a few hours of his time.) The Black Iris made its television debut in the reality series “Laguna Beach”, and James counts Elizabeth Taylor and Oprah Winfrey among his many famous clients. To have him jazz up the house of a peon like me was very special — those fab gold arrangements: shhhh — florals straight from JoAnn’s.

I posted this question last week, but we were probably all too busy ordering our free range turkeys (rest his soul, our parrot is always very well behaved on Thanksgiving while she watches me stuff Big Bird) and menu-planning. So do tell: who’s stove blew up? Any garbage disposal disasters? Did your dishwasher break down and you pitched the plates? Anyone’s refrigerator die and spoil the stuffing? Do you understand finally why people want two dishwashers?

Not for politics, but for Rick and DeDe Mercer Moffett’s Frisco house to win Favorite Halloween Decor on The Today Show. Dede, who lives at 5130 Kiowa Drive in Frisco, is really into decorating for Halloween and Christmas. Couple weeks ago she saw the Halloween decorating contest on TV, rolled up her sleeves, and decorated to the hilt. Then she submitted the photos. She didn’t even know her house was a finalist until a friend called. Earlier the Moffett home was in second place, was just dropped to number 3… come on and vote! We cannot let a home in Michigan or Oregon outdo Texas for Halloween! Besides, house number one is way too electricity-intensive, in my opinion, and the Moffett’s made great use of a turret — there are EYES in it!
