Bush Tears Down Northway Estate Next Door… but Who’s Down the Street?

Just what is going on behind those presidential gates on Daria Place? As Brad Watson reported exclusively on Channel 8 Monday night, the Bushes have indeed torn down the 4684 square foot circa 1958 Northway estate they purchased more than a year ago (through their agent, Allie Beth Allman) when they bought 10141 Daria Place through their Midland accountant, Robert A. McCleskey. Watson spoke to George Gomez of Billy Nabors Wrecking, whose company handled the demolition. Gomez says that the 1.26 acre lot was cleared and smoothed over with topsoil and he knows of no plans to build on it. The former first family apparently wants to expand their present yard. Realtors familiar with the home, which was listed last year for $1.6 million, say it is not all that desirable for building anyhow, since a creek runs along the northern edge, and it really needed to be scraped.

These exclusive photographs were taken in early December of 2008, before the Bushes owned the property, when I thought they were buying it for the raw land. It was when I began investigating the neighbors that I learned the former president and Mrs. Bush had actually purchased 10141 Daria Place from Daniel and Laura Boeckman.

So then we thought 10151 was going to be a hide-out for the Secret Service. Which leads us to another property on the street, one that I have always speculated had some attachment to the former president: 10121 Daria Drive, a sprawling 4505 square foot circa 1958 mid-century modern-esque property at the southern intersection of Daria Drive and Daria Place. It is owned by Azalea Enterprises PS LTD, and the tax bill is sent to an address on Versailles that is owned by one John Luther King, Jr and his lovely wife, Teresa Ann. Mr. King is a Director for Fort-Worth based Encore Energy Partners, LP, a director of Tyler Technologies, Inc. and Chief Executive Officer/President of Luther King Capital Management. Mr. King appears also to be a significant contributor to the Republican party, both Bush-Cheney and more recently, McCain-Palin. 10121 Daria Drive was purchased with a $700,000 loan from Northern Trust Bank after a listing price of $1.29 million. The property closed on September 12, 2008 very quietly — listing agent was Mark Cain with Dave Perry-Miller & Associates, buyers agent of course who else but the President’s agent Allie Beth Allman. On September 17, the home was put up for lease at $7,000 a month, that price soon reduced to a more reasonable $5000. Now Dallas Dirt has learned that the very first tenants were none other than the Boeckmans. It appears Mr. King bought the home to give the Boeckmans a place to live while their next home was completed. And it also gave the former president and first lady a chance to move right in to 10141 Daria Place.

The home is now apparently vacant, and I’m thinking what a perfect place for the Secret Service to park and watch over the entire neighborhood. I mean, what else could Mr. King possibly have planned for that home?

I twittered the news this weekend when I saw the crews at work Saturday afternoon. DFW Around Town posted details six hours ago. (I am so competitive!) But what I am really wondering — what is that Tatum Brown homebuilders sign (tan colored) all about? My fingers are walking right over to my cell phone… could it be that construction will begin on a new Bush abode once the gate goes up? Or is this a spec home (Tatum Brown are master home builders; you will note most of their inventory is SOLD) sure to sell like hotcakes on the Darias… dialing, ringing, hi, may I please speak with Mark Danuser?

In short it’s a way for homeowners to reduce their monthly payments (not including PMI) to 31% of their pre-tax monthly income. Here are the dirty details on qualifying:

Must have originated mortgage before Jan. 1, 2009.
Be an owner-occupant.
Have an unpaid balance that is equal to or less than $729,750 (for a single-family home).

Your monthly mortgage payment must also be more than 31% of your gross (pre-tax) monthly income. Duh.There’s a three-month trial period before you lock in the lower rate for five years and if your home is in danger of foreclosure the process will be halted while you apply for the program.

I went to TREC “Young Guns” tonight at The Tower Club and learned so much. Like when I heard that the Bushes are looking at a re-design of the gate they ordered for Daria Drive — seems the first design priced out too high, and since they are footing the bill for the gate (which is so nice of them!) they wanted to go back for something a little less simpler. Tell you what, I’ll bet they are just shocked by how high building prices are.
