You know how we in Dallas always go to Fort Worth for about three reasons: Billy Bob’s, cowboy boots, or to take out of town guests to the rodeo and show them how real cowboys live. The rest of the time we never pay much attention to it. Well, pay attention. I like Fort Worth — I think the Bass Brothers helped create a beautiful, clean downtown and I like their traffic lights better than ours (sorry!). So it doesn’t surprise me to hear that the great urban migration has hit Cow Town. Tonight, a mixed-use development called West 7th celebrates it’s grand opening splash, turning Crockett Street into a street fair with Mayor Mike Moncrief, outdoor concert by Reckless Kelly, free food, free make-up and touching up (honey, this is Fort Worth and lad-ees west of DFW primp even more than we do) and goodies from Teskeys Uptown.
(Uptown? Hey you guys totally copied us.)
Now here’s the housing connection: The Lofts At West 7th will have gorgeous downtown residential: 345 high end rental units with bamboo wood floors, deep soaking tubs, designer granite kitchens, walk-in closets, efficiencies to three-bedroom apartments conveniently close to TCU, but priced for professors or baby boomers who have shed their homes but prefer being in the city than out withering on a golf course in Florida.
West 7th, we’ll be watching you! And please, no plastic surgeons’ offices as tenants, that’s too Hollywood for Cow Town.
On Valentine’s Day my sister and I drove to FW, toured the newish Modern Museum, the first day opening of Andy Warhol’s exhibition, lunched at the Modern Cafe next to the water and then saw Tuna/Vegas next door at Casa Manana.. wonderful chilly winter day totally out of Dallas.. and only a 50 minute drive with zero traffic…
Is Fort Worth the new Austin? Let’s hope so!
Fort Worth the new Austin..uhhh never!! Why can’t Fort Worth be Fort Worth, Austin be Austin,Dallas be Dallas, etc. Not every place needs to be alike. (Austin is the best city in TX, IMO.) Anyway, I’ve always found Fort Worth to be a really dull city, but I’ll drive over and check this place out. Last time I was over there, this place was open, but there was little retail in there.
Please do and let me know.
My son just graduated in December from TCU and loves Ft. Worth. Now works and lives downtown. It is a great place to live and visit
As a TCU grad, I miss Fort Worth every day. I would move in a heartbeat if the opportunity arose. I didn’t know it “pre-sundance square” but did love it before there was anything cool on 7th street. Now it has only gotten better.
I’m about to move to Austin for grad school and I am one of the few NOT looking forward to it. It is grimy, overpriced, and overhyped. Yes, Barton Springs is cool, I love visiting it once per year. Hike and bike trails, awesome. I can ride my bike in Dallas. Parking is a nightmare and I’m quite sure I will accidentally run over a Lance Armstrong wannabe. Ok, thank you for letting me vent. I’ll be back in 2 years.
