Time for House Porn. This new gadget from Realty Times is pretty cool — it’s showcasing the properties of one Nora Ling Lane with Virginia Cook. True, you have to listen to the “newscaster’s” voice-over telling us how WONDERFUL is the property — pristine, perfect blah blah blah. Then there’s that Abercromie and Fitch-like music — wait, nothing could be that annoying. But I am crazy over 6916 Hunter’s Glen — just park me in that wine cellar — I’ll never know when that $8,000,000 price tag hits me. 3517 Centenary is pretty cool, too, and a bargain at $2.3. Very cool properties here, now what do we think of the format? Warning: you’ll need a bottle from that wine cellar to watch all these, this is one long dose of porn.
I know as agents we have to always one-up the competition, but this is something else. I showed this to two of my better clients and both agreed they would stop watching far before giving the property a chance.
In my honest opinion, if I have a great property to sell, it usually sells itself, no need for gimmicks.
Hope I don’t get any hate mail for this!
Alex,not to be rude…but if it sells itself, why do they need you. I actually use the product and my sellers are overwhelmed by the exposure it gets…close to 7-10,000 Realtor distribution, plus youtube, plus Realtor.com….it’s not about one-uping agents…it’s about selling real estate and getting them into your house. I’ve sold 2 houses from the webcasts that otherwise would not have been shown.
This is not a video – it’s a powerpoint presentation created with still photos. Nora Ling Lane got ripped off by Realty Times – Do we know how much she paid for it?
Consumers, take note: people ask me over and over how do I know if my agent is truly working to sell my home? This post is like eavesdropping!
I never frequent blogs but a client sent me this post to me so I felt compelled to respond….”Builder” take note…If you call exposure to 10,000 agents, posting on Realtor.com and YouTube, sending it out on every agent inquiry, exposure to your entire network database, getting double the showings, professional broadcasters doing a webcast on your home, having a tool to follow up with on open houses, not to speak of selling four houses so far from the webcasts…all for $198….then I would love to get ripped off like this everyday! Remember the name of the game is getting results and this product delivers!
The product may be great but -
shouldn’t there be some sort of disclosure that Nora Ling Lane’s husband Jody Lane is the President and CEO of Realty Times?
Dr.House,
If what you state is true, what does that have to do with needing a disclosure? It all comes down to results, and if this product produces exposure and sales, then who cares who is married to whom?

I’ve used this product too, with mixed results. It takes the on-line presentation of a property one step further. And I’m finding most people today prefer a slideshow or nice still photo presentation over a virtual tour.
In this slow market, a property needs to stand out. Now is when sellers are looking for agents who go the extra mile to market their home with unique ideas. Call them gimmicks if you’d like, but just sticking a sign in the yard and placing a property on MLS doesn’t do it in today’s climate – unless you want to price the property so low that the price is the attention grabber. I haven’t found any sellers who would prefer to do that.
The distribution to Realtors is useless. A Realtor’s inbox is flooded with spam to begin with and now these Realty Times videos come in so often, I know the majority of agents just click delete. The videos are too long, it pans over the same still images used in the photo gallery, so you aren’t showing me anything new and the sportscaster guy is annoying. Plus, have you ever seen a Realty Times video where the featured home wasn’t the “best pric in the neighborhood”? Give me a break.

1) “If what you state is true” http://realtytimes.com/rtpages/contactus4.htm
2) “what does that have to do with needing a disclosure?”
Are you serious? It might be the greatest thing since sliced bread – but I think most people like to know when testimonials may have a perceived conflict.
Dr. House,
You and I agree that “most people like to know when testimonials may have a perceived conflict”. But my point was that the conflict really has nothing to do with whether they are married. The conflict has more to do with the fact that Realty Times is being paid by an agent (any agent, not just Nora) to say nice things about their listing, but that was not what you pointed to. As “Lydia” and “Reality” state, they get these all the time from other agents. Are you implying that Realty Times only does a half-a$$ job for non-spouse clients? I think that’s crazy.

@BF
Don’t know where you came up with that conclusion.
Since you and I agree there is a perceived conflict, there is nothing more to disagree about on the testimonial.
Since I am not a realtor, I do not know if these Realty Times presentations are sent as “hard news” or “advertorials”. If sent as hard news, then there is a bigger issue – my guess is that they are no different than the Park Cities People real estate section or the Sunday DMN real estate section.
My assumption would be that most (if not all) realtors realize that an email from “Realty Times” about a listing is not a piece of hard journalism but a marketing puff piece.
If it generates page views then showings then I think it does what it is supposed to do – nothing more or less.
As just a Park Cities mom who is currently casually looking for a new home — I enjoy the virual tours and am disappointed when a listing does not have one. To me, it helps you better understand the floor plan and where everthing is located. As someone who has had her “eye” on the Centenary house, I thought the Lane presentation showed a lot of pictures I had not seen before and gave a lot of great information. Keep it up!
I am shocked how long this going back and forth has gone on. I know that realtors are in competition everyday but should someone like Dr.House be giving advice when he is not even a realtor. I have used Nora Ling Lane as a realtor since we moved the first time to Dallas. We do not live in a million dollar home but she has treated us like we were buying a 10 million dollar home. Nora has worked morning and night on our behalf many times. My husband and I trust her completely and if she wants to use her husbands company to help sell our home…..what is the BIG deal. Isn’t it about selling houses in a crazy market. We should all be supporting one another instead of being critical. I am shocked by some of these comments and hope that this is the last entry because to me it is getting personal. Nora Ling Lane is a fabulous realtor and when we downsize again which we may have to soon because my husband worked for Lehman Bros……….she will be the first person we call.
@apc
My apologies if you thought I was making disparaging remarks about Nora Ling Lane. She has an excellent reputation (as does her husband) and is a wonderful realtor.
