House Porn: The Murchison House

20,000 square feet may not be that big a deal these days, but back in 1938, when Anton Korn designed the Murchison house, it created quite a stir.  269 feet long by 40 feet deep.  Had a chance to tour it last weekend–my favorite part was the J. Edgar Hoover Wing–so called because Hoover was a frequent guest of the house.  (I would have put him in a separate wing, too.)

Wilson Fuqua, the architect who presided over the recent rehab, and Warren Johnson, who handled landscape design duties, came out to talk about their work, along with the new owners.  The tour was presented by the Dallas Architecture Forum and Preservation Dallas, collaborating again–and rightly so–after an apparent hiatus of a number of years.

I have photos of this house from the early 80s when I lived in one of the cottage houses on the estate when I was in college and babysat the owner’s grandchildren. I remember the mile walk down to the mailbox and back (on Keller Springs Rd) and collecting golf balls that came over the fence from the country club. The pool (along the creek) was the first private pool in Dallas and the carriage house held an incredibly impressive art collection.
There were some spectacular parties here that included everything rock star performances to dinners for royalty and presidents.
If someone is interested in some photos of the property, I’m happy to pass them along.

    Hi Lydia,
I just finished the book “Same Kind of Differesnt As Me” and the Murchison House is mentioned at the end of the book. I would love to see your photos if you are willing to share. If you haven’t read the book it is awesome!
    Thanks,
    Lisa
