Green Houses–Modernist Edition

Labron house, Kelly Mitchell, architectGreat project and a wonderful website.  Kelly Mitchell is the architect, who was introduced to me at a La Reunion TX event by partner and husband  Sean Garman (who referred to Kelly not as either of those but as “my sweetheart”–thus endearing himself to me forever).  And at least one of the clients reads Dallas Dirt religiously.

These folks are going after LEED Platinum–that’s the highest level and no small feat.  For infinite detail on the guidelines for LEED for Homes, go here.

We wish them well!  And hope to get a tour.

At 8645 Labron Avenue in Dallas. It’s not for sale…it will be lived in by the current owners.

We live in the first Platinum LEED Certified House in Dallas and we love it! Our electricity bills average $100 a month for a 2900 square foot home. Alan Hoffmann was our builder. It is an insulated concrete form house. I wish more people would get interested in this type of building. It is so good for the environment.

As far as I’m aware, there are only 2 LEED Platinum homes in Dallas, one that was built before the final regulations came out in January 2008, and one in the Urban Reserve community that beat us out to be the first one in Dallas under the new, permanent guidelines (damn them!).

I agree with your comments. It was some work educating ourselves and our builder, but the real cost was not that much beyond what we would have done anyway to build a modern, energy-efficient home!

Let’s hope soon we can say we were among the first of thousands and thousand of LEED homes in Dallas!
