Sanger House On I-35

If you’ve driven I-35 north to Oklahoma, you’ve probably seen this unfinished mansion on the west side of the highway. Just. Sitting. There. I snapped this photo a few weeks ago while en route to Heather Nielson’s wedding in Wichita, Kansas. Does anyone know who built this, why it has not been completed, and generally what the dirt is?

ah-ha! I have been waiting for this dirt. It has been there for 15-20 years? Only recently did “someone” put the exterior stone and brick on.

But I have never known the story.

From a friend of mine and resident Sanger expert,

“Well it has been there as long as I can remember. I had always heard that the guy that was having it built went to jail for drugs. I don’t know if that is true or not. My mom said that a couple was having it built and they split up and just quit building it. She said he worked for a pharmaceutical company and maybe that is where the drug story came from. A guy by the last name of Porter owns it now (along with half of Sanger:)) He had some work done to it but I think just enough for it not to fall down. That is all I know, hope it helps.”

    And there you have it.

no- but it DRIVES me crazy. it’s been there for years. it’s completely ridiculous. it’s like this huge, oversized shell of a mansion in the middle of nothing…

glad someone else is intrigued by the story..

man, this house has been in the back of my mind for ages! I went to OU, so whenever i would drive home to my parents house in Celina (practically Oklahoma, no?) i would pass this house and wonder about it. Glad to see it catches someone else’s curiosity too.

The brick and stone work was done about 4-5 years ago. We heard Mr. Porter was going to make it into two restaurants. One on each side but Mr. Porter passed away about 3 years ago and it has sat empty with no work being done to it since his passing.

I love this house. We live in Gainesville so everytime we drive up to Denton we wonder what the deal is. Ofcourse we all say it’s haunted. It sure makes a good bedtime story.
