New Yorkers Pollute Less Than Us?

Yes, according to last week’s issue of New York Magazine, which I am just getting around to reading because I have been busy recycling all the holiday wrapping and boxes and putting away my artificial tree and LED lights. According to the article, Americans churn out an average of 24.5 metric tons of planet-heating pollutants every year whilst New Yorkers produce just 7.1.  I just find this hard to believe. Of course, if the figure is about a third of the average maybe it’s singles versus families? And more Dallas big home dissing — from the article:

”But in individual terms, New Yorkers are up there with the Amish. While in the rest of the country, Americans are building ever-bigger houses and burning more and more gas, people here take the subway and live in what real-estate brokers euphemistically describe as “cozy” apartments. As a result, a typical New Yorker uses less than a third as much electricity as an average Dallas resident.”

Makes sense if you limit it to NYC residents — very few residents have cars, residences (apts, townhomes, etc.) much smaller, public transportation to almost everywhere, all essential needs met by stores within walking distance from your apartment, commuters by definition are excluded from the study, etc.

believe it!! we moved to dallas from new york 3 years ago. in new york i did not own a car, did most of my errands on foot & often walked to work. for years we did not have air conditioning & didn’t really miss it. we could walk to the local greenmarket and purchase fruit, vegetables, meat & fish from local producers. if we ordered take out it would be delivered by bicycle, as are many of the daily deliveries. the postmen & women push carts door to door to deliver the mail.
here in dallas, like many other dallasites, i cannot walk to do anything other than exercise.
